ActivitiesIUPAP 100 PHOTO CONTEST
The contest is aimed at professional and amateur photographers and at science students and researchers. The images must be related to physics research and/or education, the impact of physics on everyday lives or an event or process in which physics plays a role. In the case of research, it can reflect the object of study of the scientific activity, the people who carry it out, its instrumentation and facilities or the technologies resulting from physics research.
The IUPAP 100 Photo Contest accepts entries beginning 08:00 EST, 14 February 2022, and ends at 23:59 EST on 14 April 2022. More details on how to register and submit your entries are described further down. The full set of rules is available here.
Brief description
Participants must be over 18 years of age at the time of submission and the photos/images must be free of rights. The images must be submitted with a nickname, using the same nickname for all the images submitted by the same author or group of authors. Upon submission, the authors authorize the IUPAP to exhibit their works, identified by the corresponding nickname, on the IUPAP’s website to carry out the selection process.
The works must be submitted in one of the following categories:
- BEYOND OUR EYES: images that have been obtained through special scientific equipment or have been made via computer simulations of physical processes. Images submitted within this category can have up to 3 co-authors.
- AT A GLANCE: all other images that have been obtained with a professional, amateur or cellular camera. Images submitted within this category must have only one author.
IUPAP is organized in Commissions and Working Groups that look into different subfields or aspects of the practice of physics. You have to choose one of them upon submission. Please choose “Other” if you think that your submission does not relate to the themes of any of the IUPAP’s commissions or working groups.
Each photo/image should have a title, mainly for identification purposes, and an accompanying descriptive text. The text should be between 500 and 1,000 characters long without spaces. It should contain a synoptic description of how the image is related to physics in a language that can be easily understood by the public and mention the place where the photograph was taken (if applicable). It should also briefly describe the technical details of the photo/image.
Some personal information on the author(s) and signed authorizations of the person(s) or guardian of persons that can be identified in the photos (if any) is also requested upon submission. All this information will be stored separately from the image and accompanying text that will be analyzed by the jury.
Each person can be author or co-author of up of two (2) entries. The contest is limited to the first 1,500 entries. Members of the IUPAP Council, Commissions, Affiliated Commissions or Working Groups, the contest judges, and consultants or contractors of IUPAP are not eligible to participate in the contest. Contest is void where prohibited by law.
Judging will be conducted by a panel of judges selected by IUPAP which may include IUPAP Staff. The composition of the jury will be announced by the closing date for submissions. The jury will select 6 entries in each category, BEYOND OUR EYES and AT A GLANCE; 3 entries in each category will receive a monetary award (1st: 2000euro; 2nd: 1000euro; 3rd: 500euro) and the other 3 honorary awards. In addition, the selection of 2 photos in each category will be done over IUPAP’s social networks and will be open to all IUPAP’s followers. These winning entries will be given “People’s Choice” recognition (and can overlap with some of the images/photos selected by the Jury). Some additional images/photos might be selected by the various IUPAP’s structures to be used on the IUPAP website
